“Long before divorce, Bill Gates had reputation for Questionable Behavior. Melinda French Gates voiced concerns about her husband’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and a harassment claim against his money manager. He also had an affair with an employee.”
In the wake of Bill and Melinda Gates’s divorce announcement earlier this month, several pieces of gossips have arisen detailing the discontent in their soon-to-be-dissolved unification. While many billionaire couples counter snags surrounding fidelity and wiles over who is in their cohort, the tiffs between Mr. and Mrs. Microsoft boiled down to a very explicit version of those angsts: Bill Gates’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein.

According to reporting earlier this month in People, the Daily Beast, and The Wall Street Journal,
“The pair shared seats and words on several occasions over the computing giant’s connections to the convicted sex offender, to the point that Melinda Gates reportedly began speaking to divorce lawyers in 2019 just after her husband’s ties to Epstein became public. The founder and former head of the US technology giant stepped down as board chair in March 2020.”
“Microsoft Corp. board members decided that Bill Gates needed to step down from its board in 2020 as they pursued an investigation into the billionaire’s prior romantic relationship with a female Microsoft employee that was deemed inappropriate,”
A spokeswoman for Gates told the Journal,
“This was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably. The company was alerted in the second half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000. A committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm, to conduct a thorough investigation. The employee, an engineer, claimed in a letter to have had a sexual relationship with Gates “over years,”. Some board members also asked about links between Gates and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for allegedly trafficking minors.”
Though Gates’s team assured the board the Microsoft founder had met Epstein for “philanthropic reasons” and “regretted doing so,” the Journal said. It is not clear how much Ms. French Gates knew about her husband’s inexplicable behavior or to what degree it pushed towards their split.
