Shaukat Ali’s Singing is a Vibrant Tonic for folk-music freaks
It is Shaukat Ali’s novelty and distinctiveness that has made him probably the last of those who rely on the strength of their voice and the pakkapun of the sur, which can only be achieved by long sessions of perpetual riaz.
Ali, who is famous for songs he sang during the 1965 and 1971 wars, such as Saathion Mujahidon Jaag Utha Hai Sara Watan, Mera Puttar Pakistan Da, and Apna Quaid Aik Hai amongst many others, has been unwell for the past several years.
Shaukat Ali is known for singing Sufi poetry with matchless potency and a wide vocal range, for instance, Heer Waris Shah and Saif ul Maluk. Shaukat Ali received the ‘Voice of Punjab’ award in 1976. In July 2013, he was honoured with the ‘Pride of Punjab’ award by the Pakistan Institute of Language, Art, and Culture.
