Meet Zeena Ali: New Zealand’s 1st Policewoman to Wear Hijab in Uniform
“Zeena Ali is the first recruit to request it as part of her uniform and is invited to take part in the development process. Constable Ali, who was born in Fiji and moved to New Zealand as a child, decided to join the police after the Christchurch terror attack.”
During training for her wing, Zeena said!
“When I had to go swimming, I was able to wear long sleeves — a full swimsuit. It was when I was just training to get into police, that the Christchurch terror attack happened and if I was a fully-fledged constable then I would have gone down to support the victims and their families.”
Zeena Ali opines about “Hijab”
“The move will encourage other women to apply to the force as well. Having a police-branded hijab means women, who may not have previously considered policing, can do so now. It’s great how the police incorporated my religion and culture.”
According to BBC,
“Other forces such as the Metropolitan Police in London and Scotland Police offer the option of a uniform hijab. We aimed to create an inclusive service reflecting the country’s diverse community. In the UK, the Metropolitan Police in London earlier approved a uniform hijab in 2006 with Police Scotland following in 2016. In Australia, Maha Sukkar of Victoria Police wore a hijab in 2004.”
We are enthused over the flying colors of Zeena ALI. Bravo girl!
